What is the hybridisation of p in ` PCl_5`. Why are axial `P-Cl` bonds longer than the equatorial bonds?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Hybirdisation of P in `PCl_5` is `sp^3`d. Since the axial bond pairs suffer more repulsive interaction from the equatorial bond pairs, the axial `P-Cl` bonds are slightly longer than the equatorial bonds.
