Define dipole moment. The dipole moment of `BF_3` is zero. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
In `BCl_3` the three polar B-Cl bonds are directed towards the three corners of an equilateral triangle. Dipole moment is a vector quantity. Sicne `BCl_2` is symmetrical, the individual moments get cancelled. Thus `BCl_3` has a net dipole moment zero.
