Why is nitric acid added to sodium extract before adding silver nitrate for testing halogens?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
If the compound contains N or S, the extract will contain NaCN or `Na_2S.HNO_3` is added and boiled to decompose NaCN and `Na_2S` as HCN(g) and `H_2S`(g). Otherwise `CN^-` and `S^2-` ions will interfere in the test of halogens by forming precepitates such as AgCN and AgS respectively.
