This reaction is known as Halo form reaction.
Aldehydes and ketones having at least one methyl keto group are oxidised by sodium hypohalite to sodium salts of carboxylic acids with one carbon atom less than that of the parent compound.
The methyl group is converted to haloform. This reaction is called haloform reaction.
