If the ice on the polar cap of the earth melts how will it effect the duration of the day?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As no external torque works, L = I`omega` = I`((2pi)/T)` = constant. When ice melts the mass concentrated near the axis of rotation (polar axis) sperads, thereby increasing MI of the earth. Hence, T also increases, i.e., the duration of the day increases.
