A LASER is a source- of very intense, monochromatic, and unidirectional beam of light. These properties of a laser light can be exploited to measure long distances. The distance of the Moon from the Earth has been already determined very precisely using a laser as a source 'of light. A laser light beamed at the Moon takes 2.56 s to return after reflection at the Moon’s surface. How much is the radius of the lunar orbit around the Earth?

What is observed when a beam of light is passed through a colloidal solution?

What is a beam of light?

• Take a thick sheet of cardboard and make a small hole or narrow slit in its middle. • Allow sunlight to fall on the narrow slit. This gives a narrow beam of white light. • Now, take a glass prism and allow the light from the slit to fall on one of its faces as shown in Fig. • Turn the prism slowly until the light that comes out of it appears on a nearby screen. What do you observe? You will find a beautiful band of colours.
