Why are flocs important in bioligical treatment of waste water?

Flocs are large, heavy masses of aerobic bacteria, algae and semi-decayed organic matter associated with fungal filaments in sewage water, which settle down in secondary treatment tanks. They can be easily removed making water purified and drinkable.
