Will Ag metal reduce `Sn^(2+)`?
`E_(Ag^+)^@, Ag=+0.8 vol t, E_(Sn^(2+))^@, Sn=-0.14` volt

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`Ag=Ag^+ +e, E^@=-0.8` volt
`Delta G^@=-1(-0.8) F=0.8F`
or `2Ag=2Ag^(+) +2e, E^@=-0.8` volt , `Delta G^@=1.6F`………..(1)
`Sn^(2+)+2e=Sn, E^@=-0.14` volt , `Delta G^@=-2(-0.14) F=0.28F`……..(2)
On adding (1) and (2)
`2Ag+Sn^(2+)=2Ag^(+)+ Sn, DeltaG^@=+1.6F+0.28F=+1.88F`
`therefore E^@= (Delta G^@)/(-nF)=(1.88F)/(-2F)=-0.94` volt
The negative value of `E^@` indicates that the above reaction is not feasible , i.e., Ag will not reduce `Sn^(2+)` to Sn.
