The ratio of rates of diffusion of two g...

The ratio of rates of diffusion of two gases x and y under similar conditions is 2:1. What will be the ratio of their average speeds if gas X is at `-23^@C` and gas y is at `273^@C`?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Ratio of rates of diffusion `(r_x)/(r_y) = sqrt((M_y)/(M_x))=2`
therefore ` (M_y)/(m_x) =4`
Ratio of average speeds is given as,` ( vec(C_x))/( vec(C_y)) = sqrt((T_x)/( T_y) (M_y)/(M_x))`
Substituting the values, the ratio of speeds =`sqrt((250 )/( 546 ) xx 4)`
`= 1 .2 :1`
