Calculate the oxidation number of the underlined element in the following molecules.
`Na_(2)ul(S_(2))O_(3)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`Na_(2)S_(2)O_(3)` : Suppose, the oxidation number of each S atom in `Na_(2)S_(2)O_(3)` is x. Since `Na_(2)S_(2)O_(3)` is a neutral molecule, we have
`(+1)xx2+(x)xx2+(-2)xx3=0`
or x=+2
Hence, the oxidation number of each S atom in `Na_(2)S_(2)O_(3)` is +2.
