Why does the following reaction occur ?
`XeO_(6)^(4-) (aq) + 2 F^(-) (aq) + 6 H^(+) (aq) to XeO_(3) (g) + F_(2)(g) + 3H_(2)O(1)`
What conclusion about the compound `Na_(4)XeO_(6)` (of which `XeO_(6)^(4-)` is a part ) can be drawn from the reaction.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`overset(+8)(XeO_(6)^(4-))(aq)+overset(-1)(2F^(-))(aq)+6H^(+)(aq)tooverset(+6)(XeO_(3))(s)+overset(0)(F_(2)(g))+3H_(2)O(l)`
In this reaction, `XeO_(6)` gets reduced to `XeO_(3)` while `F^(-)` ions are oxidised to `F_(2)`. The reaction occurs because `XeO_(6)^(4-)` is a stronger oxidising agent than `F_(2),Na_(4)XeO_(6)` is powerful oxidising agent.
