Starting with sodium chloride how would you proceed to prepare (i) sodium metal (ii) sodium hydroxide (iii) sodium peroxide (iv) sodium carbonate ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Sodium metal can be obtained by electrolysis of a fused mixture of NaCl (40%) and `CaCl_2` (60%) using iron cathode and graphite anode (Down.s cell). `CaCl_2` is added to lower the melting point of NaCl.
On account of electrolysis, sodium is obtained at cathode.
`underset(("fused"))(NaCl) hArr Na^(+) + Cl^(-)`
At cathode : `Na^(+) + e^(-) to Na`
At anode : `Cl^(-) + e^(-) to Cl`
`Cl + Cl to Cl_2 (g)`
