Why is Bi(V) a stronger oxidant than Sb(V) ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

As we go down a group, the stability of + 3 oxidation state increases as compared to +5 oxidation state due to inert pair effect. Therefore, Bi(V) will readily take up two electrons to change into Bi(III) and thus, behave as an oxidant. In the case of Sb(V), conversion from +5 state +3 state does not take place readily. Hence, Bi(V) is a stronger oxidant than Sb(V).
