Albumins are the most abundant proteins ...

Albumins are the most abundant proteins in blood. At `25^(@)C`, 3.5 g of albumin in 100 ml of water produces and osmotic pressure is 0.014 atm. What is the molecular weight of albumin?

Text Solution

Weight of albumin = 3.5 g
Molecular weight of albumin `= "M g mol"^(-1)`(say)
`:.` Number of moles of albumin = `(3.5)/(M)`
Volume of solution prepared = Volume of water for a dilute
solution `= 100 mL = (100)/(1000)L=0.1L`
`T=273 + 25 = 298 K, R=0.0821" L atm deg"^(-1) "mol"^(-1)`
`pi` = osmotic pressure of the solution = 0.014 atm
Now, we have `pi = CRT=(n)/(V) RT`
`:. 0.014 = (3.5 xx 0.0821 xx 298)/(M xx 0.1)`
or `M=(3.5 xx 0.0821 xx 298)/(0.1 xx 0.014) = 61164.5"g mol"^(-1)`
