Why does a solution of ethanol and cyclohexane shows positive deviations?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

There are intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the molecules of ethanol. On adding cyclohexane to ethanol, molecules of cyclohexane get in between the molecules of ethanol thus breaking the hydrogen bonds and reducing ethanol-ethanol interactions.
