Concentration terms such as mass percent...

Concentration terms such as mass percentage, ppm, mole fraciton and molality are independent of temperature, however molarity is a function of temperature. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

By definition, molarity of a solution is defined as the number of moles of solute dissolved in one litre of solution. Thus, molarity takes into account the volume of the solution which changes with change in temperature. Hence, molarity is a function of temprature. On the other hand, all other terms used to express the concentration of a solution involve the mass of solvent which does not change with change in temperature.

What is the effect of temperature of a solutions on its molarity and molality.

Statement-1 : Molarity of a solution depends on temperature but molality is independent of temperature Statement-2 : Molarity depends on volume of solution but molality depends on mass of solvent

Assertion: One molar aqueous solution is more concentrated than that of 1 molal aqueous solution . Reason : Molarity is a function of temperature as volume depends on temperature.
