Calculate the shortest wavelength of the...

Calculate the shortest wavelength of the spectral emitted in Balmer series.
[Given Rydberg constant, `R=10^7m^(-1)`]

Text Solution

For Balmer series, `n_1 = 2`
`therefore 1/(lambda) = R[1/(2^2) - 1/(n^2)]`
Here `n = oo` for shortest wavelength
`therefore 1/(lambda) = R [1/(2^2) - 1/(oo^2)] = R/4 = (1.097 xx 10^7)/(4)`
`implies lambda = 4/(1.097 xx 10^7) m`
` lambda = 3.646 xx 10^(-7) m = 3646 Å`
