The ore of uranium found in nature contains `""_(92)U^(238)and""_(92)U^(235)`. Although both the isotopes are fissionable, it is found out experimentally that one of the two isotopes is more easily fissionable.
Give a reason for your answer.

The natural uranium consists of three isotopes ""_(92)^(238)U, ""_(92)^(235)U and ""_(92)^(234)U in the ratio 99.274 : 0.720, 0.006. Find the average atomic mass of uranium.

(a) Name two isotopes of uranium which are fissionable. (b) Which of the isotope mentioned in part (a) above is easily fissionable ? Give reason. (c ) State whether the neutron needed for fission reaction of the isotope mentioned in part (b) above, is slow or fast ?

Uranium ores on the earth at the present time typically have a composition consisting of 99.3% of the isotope ._92U^238 and 0.7% of the isotope ._92U^235 . The half-lives of these isotopes are 4.47xx10^9yr and 7.04xx10^8yr , respectively. If these isotopes were equally abundant when the earth was formed, estimate the age of the earth.

(a) On analysis a sample of uranium ore was found to contain 0.277g of ._(82)Pb^(206) and 1.667g of ._(92)U^(238) . The half life period of U^(238) is 4.51xx10^(9) year. If all the lead were assumed to have come from decay of ._(92)U^(238) , What is the age of earth? (b) An ore of ._(92)U^(238) is found to contain ._(92)U^(238) and ._(82)Pb^(206) in the weight ratio of 1: 0.1 The half-life period of ._(92)U^(238) is 4.5xx10^(9) year. Calculate the age of ore.

Write the approximate value of the energy released in the fission of one nucleus of ""_(92)^(235) U . What is the reason for it ?

This law was given by, a French chemist , Joseph Proust. He stated that a given compound always contains exactly the same proportion of elements by weight. Proust worked with two samples of curpic carbonate- one of which was of natural origin and the other was synthetic one . He found that the composition of elements present in it was for both the samples as shown below: Thus, irrespective of the source, a given compound always contains same elements in the same proportion. The validity of this law has been confrmed by various experiments. It is sometimes also reffered to as Law of constant composition. Limitation: This law is not applicable if the compound is formed from different isotopes of an element . The two isotopes of carbon C-12 and C-14 form carbondioxide C^(12)O_(2) and C^(14)O_(2) . The ratio of C : O is 12 : 32 and 14 : 32 respectively .It is not a constant ratio. 6.488 g lead with 1.002 g oxygen to form an oxide. This oxide is also obtained by heating Pb(NO_(3))_(2) , It is found that % of lead in this oxide is 86.62 .Show that these date illustrate the law of definite proportions.

This solution is treated with excess of NaCl solution when 0.66 g AgCl is formed. One gram metallic silver wire is heated in dry Cl_(2) ,1.32 g AgCl is formed . Show that these data confirm the law of constant proportion.
