1.0g of Mg is burnt in a closed vessel which contains 0.5g of `O_2`. Which is the limiting reactant? What is the amount of MgO formed in the reaction?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`underset(48g)2Mg+ underset(32g)(O_2)rarr underset(80g)2MgO`
1g of Mg will react with oxygen = 32/48 = 0.67g
oxygen available = 0.5g. Therefore oxygen is the limiting reagent.
32g of oxygen forms 80g of MgO
0.5g of oxygen will form (80/32)`xx` 0.5 = 1.25g
