Why are the cations smaller than atom?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Cations are smaller than atom, this is due to the fact that effective nuclear charge of the cation is higher which causes greater attraction between the nucleus and the outer most shell electron. So contraction of size, takes place so `M^+ ltM`.
