Which of the elements Na, Mg, Si and P have the geatest difference between 1st and 2nd ionization enthalpy and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The element Na is expected to have the greatest difference between 1st and 2nd lonizationenthalpies. After losing one electron, `Na^+` ion acquires a noble ga configuration and the removal of the second electron is the most difficult as compared to the other elements.
