Explain why 1-butyne produces white precipitate with ammoniacal `AgNO_3` solution but 2 butyne does not respond to this reaction.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

1-butyne `[CH_3-CH_2-C-=CH]` contains acidic hydrogen. Hence it will react with ammoniacal `AgNO_3` solution to form a white precipitate of `CH_3-CH_2-C-=C-Ag` but due to the absence of acidic hydrogen, 2-butyne `[CH_3-C-=C-CH_3] does not respond to this test.
