What is halogen carrier?...

What is halogen carrier?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The halogenation of benzene takes place in the presence of a Lewis acid such as ferric halide or aluminium halide. The function of Lewis acids like `AlCl_3`, `FeCl_3` or `FeBr_3` is to carry the halogen to aromatic hydrocarbons. So, they are called halogen carriers.
