Give reason for the following :
In monoalkylation of benzene with an alkyl halide and `AlCl_3`, an excess of benzene is used.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In absence of excess benzene, polyalkylation takes place. However, when excess of benzene is used, benzene favours monoalkylation by increasing the chance for collision between `R^+` and benzene and prevents polyalkylation between `R^+` and `C_6H_5R`.
