Why is atomic radius of Gallium less than that of Aluminium ?

Explanation

Down the group the atomic radius is expected to increase. But for Gallium in the presence of comparatively larger 3d orbitals than p orbitals electrons residing in the former do not have sufficient shielding effect to counter the increase in nuclear charge. Thus effective nuclear charge for Ga is more than expected and it's radius decreases.
