Explain: BCl3overset("HOH")rarr[B(OH)4...

Explain:
`BCl_3overset("HOH")rarr[B(OH)_4]` but `AlCl_3overset("HOH")underset(H^+)rarr[Al(H_2O)_6]^(3+)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`BCl_3` on hydrolysis give `[B(OH)_4]^(-)` ion in which B atom is `sp^3` hybridised and shape of the ion is tetrahedral.
Acidic hydrolysis of `AlCl_3` yield `[Al(H_2O)_6]^(3+)` in which Al atom is `sp^3d^2` hybridised and the complex is octahedral.
