PbCl2 is more stable than PbCl4 - Why?...

`PbCl_2` is more stable than `PbCl_4` - Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`PbCl_2` is an ionic solid while `PbCl_4` is a molecular solid in which `PbCl_4` molecules are covalent in nature. This is due to smaller size and more positive charge on `Pb^(4+)` ion that results more polarisation of the anions giving the compound more covalent character. so `PbCl_4` has less melting point than `PbCl_2` and is less stable.
