`XY_2` and `X_2Y_3` are two compounds of the elements X and Y 0.15 mole of each of these compounds weigh 9.3 and 15.9 g respectively. Calculate the atomic masses of X and Y.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Let, atomic mass of X = `"weight"/"molecular mass"`
`therefore x + 2y = 9.3/0.16 ....(i) and 2x + 3y = 15.9/0.15.....(ii)`
On solving : x = 26, y = 18
