Explain why is sodium less reactive than potassium.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The ionization enthalpy `(Delta_iH)` of potassium `(419kJmol^(_1)` is less than that of sodium `(496kJmol^(_1)` or more precisely the standard electrode potential `(E^@)` of potassium `(-2.925V)` is more negative than that of sodium `(-2.714V)` and hence potassium is more reactive than sodium.
