Explain why can alkali and alkaline earth metals not be obtained by chemical reduction methods?

Alkali and alkaline earth metals are themselves strong reducing agents and reducing agents better than them are not available. Therefore, these metals cannot be obtained by chemical reduction of their oxides or chlorides.
