Aluminium fluoride is ionic while AlCl3 ...

Aluminium fluoride is ionic while `AlCl_3` is covalent. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`F^-` ion is comparatively smaller in size than `Cl^-` ion. `Cl^-` is more polarised than `F^-`. The polarisation in `AlCl_3` is more. So it behaves as a covalent compound.
