Carbon combines with more electropositiv...

Carbon combines with more electropositive elements when heated to high temperature to form carbides. Carbides are of mainly three types
(i) Salt type carbides : They contain `C_2^(2-)` or `C^(4-)` unit
(ii) Covalent carbides : Mainly these are carbides of non-metals such as silicon & boron.
(iii) Interstitial carbides : They are formed by transition elements & consist of metallic lattices with carbon atom in the interstitial positions. e.g. WC, VC
`Be_2C` on hydrolysis produces :

A

`CH_4`

B

`C_2H_2`

C

`C_4H_4`
