The gradual and fairly predicateble changes in species composition of a given area is called ecological succession.
i. Hydrarch succession takes place in wetter area, whereas xerarch succession takes place in dry areas.
ii. In hydrarch succession, the successional series progress from hydric to mesic condition, whereas in xerarch it progress from xeric to mesic.
