Carbon dioxide is passed through lime water first a little, then in excess.

Lime water turns milky due to formation of white precipitate of calcium carbonate `(CaCO_3)` and on adding excess the white precipitate dissolves due to formation of soluble salt, calcium hydrogen carbonate `Ca(HCO_3)_2` and the solution becomes clear again.
