Density of water varies with temperature...

Density of water varies with temperature. What are its consequences ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Water has its maximum density of `1000 "kg/m"^3` at `4^@C`. Water has an unusual physical property. When cooled water first undergoes contraction in volume like other liquids, but below `4^@C`, it starts expanding till it reaches `0^@C`, where it starts freezing. This anomalous expansion of water is one of the unique property of water which has made marine life to exist in the colder region where water freezes at the top and will be liquid below the ice layer.
