Hydrogen is evolved when dilute HCl reacts with magnesium, but nothing happens in the case of mercury and silver. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Magnesium being above hydrogen in the reactivity series is more reactive than hydrogen and displaces it.
While silver and mercury being less reactive below hydrogen in the reactivity series cannot displace hydrogen
Thus, Hydrogen is evolved when dilute HCl reacts with magnesium, but nothing happens in the case of mercury and silver.
