(a)Hydrogen is placed in the first period and first group (Group IA) in the modern periodic table. Since it has only 1 electron, it has 1 electron in its valence shell.
(b) Hydrogen is placed in the same group as Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and Fr (alkali metals).
All members in this group exhibit a valency of 1, since they have 1 electron in their outermost shell. Hydrogen also exhibits a valency of 1.
Hydrogen exhibits strong affinity for non-metals, as it forms `H_2O, H_2S` and HCl, similar to sodium, which forms `Na_2O, Na_2S` and NaCl. Hydrogen acts good reducing agent, which is true for all other members in the group.
