Hydrogen exhibits properties similar to elements in Group IA (Alkali metals) and Group VIIA (Halogens). Hence, hydrogen is put at the top of the table, so that the symmetry is not disturbed.
Since it has only 1 electron, it exhibits a highly electropositive character (like an alkali metal) as well as a highly electronegative character (like a halogen), having 1 electron less than helium, which is the nearest noble gas.
With respect to ion formation, it forms `H^+` as well as `H^-` ion. Hydrogen exhibits electrovalency as well as covalency.
