Hydrogen may be prepared in the laboratory by the action of a metal with an acid.
Which of the acids dilute sulphuric, concentrated sulphuric, dilute nitric and concentrated nitric would you choose ? Explain why you would not use the acids you reject.

Text Solution

Dilute sulphuric acid is the one we would choose, which is the most suitable one for preparation of hydrogen in the lab. Concentrated sulphuric acid is not used, as hydrogen is not released in the reaction, rather it gets converted into water and sulphur dioxide is formed.
`Zn+"conc." 2H_2SO_4 to ZnSO_4 + SO_2+ 2H_2O`
Nitric acid (both concentrated and dilute) is not used, even here hydrogen is not released in the reaction as nitrates are formed, being strong oxidising agents, they oxidise formed hydrogen into water.
`3Zn+8HNO_3 to 3Zn(NO_3)_2 + 4H_2O + 2NO`
