An observer sitting in line of two tanks...

An observer sitting in line of two tanks, watches the flashes of two tanks firing at each other at the same time, but he hears the sounds of two shots 2 s and 3.5 s after seeing the flashes. If distance between the two tanks is 510 m, find the speed of sound.

Time taken by the sound of the first tank A to reach observer = 3.5 s
Time taken by the sound of the second tank B to reach observer= 2 s
Time taken by the sound of tank A to reach tank B = (3.5 - 2) = 1.5 s
If speed of sound = `v "ms"^(-1)`
Then distance between tank A and B is 1.5 v m
Distance between two tanks = 510 m
`therefore` 1.5 v= 510
Or, v=510/1.5
`therefore v=340 ms^(-1)`
`therefore` Velocity of sound = `340 ms^(-1)`
