A hydrocarbon decolourised bromine water. On ozonolysis it gives 3-methyl butanal and acetaldehyde. Write the structure of the hydrocarbon.

As the hydrocarbon decolourises bromine water, it should be unsaturated hydrocarbon. On ozonolysis, it gives two aldehydes, therefore it should be an alkene. The products of the ozonolysis are

So, to obtain the structure of the alkene, we need to put together teh two given products by joining the oxygenated carbons of the two aldehydes by a double bond. Hence, the structure of the hydrocarbon will be, `underset(5-"methylhex-2-ene")(CH_(3)-underset(underset(CH_(3))(|))(CH)-CH_(2)-overset(overset(H)(|))(C )= overset(overset(H)(|))(C )-CH_(3))`
