Out of 4s and 3d, which subshell is filled first and why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

4s is filled before 3d. For 4s subshells, `n+1= 4+0=4`, while for 3d subshell `n+1= 3+2= 5`. Since, the n+1 value for 4s subshell is lower, its energy is lower than that of 3d subshell and is filled before it.
