a and b are called as van der waal.s constant. They depend on the nature of the gas Larger the value of .a. for a gas, greater will be the attractive forces between the molecules. A gas with higher value of .a. possess greater tendency to get liquefied. SI unit of .a. is `Nm^(4) mol^(-2)`

.b. is the excluded volume of the gas. higher the value of .b., greater is the actual volume of the molecules of the gases. SI unit of .b. is `m^(3) mol^(-1)`
