Sugars are chemically carbohydrates . They are polyhydroxy aldoses , ketoses and their condensatioin products . Aldoses bear a terminal aldehyde or -CHO group while ketoses have an internal ketone or -CO group.
Thus they posses two functional groups , i.e., carbonyl and hydroxyl .
