The radiolabelled carbon in carbon dioxide supplied to potato plants in an experiment was seen in the tuber eventually. Trace the movement of the labelled carbon dioxide

Text Solution

If a radiolabelled carbon in carbon dioxide is supplied to potato plants, they will carry out the process of photosynthesis in the presence of light . As a result `""^(14)CO_(2)` will be fixed . This will form radioactive products of photosynthesis i.e., Glucose `(""^(14) C_(6) H_(12) O_(6))` . This radioactive glucose is converted to sucrose which would again be radioactive due to transfer of `""^(14)C` . These sucrose then moves into phloem and is transported to other parts of the plant . Eventually, it reaches the tuber where they are converted into radiolabelled starch and is stored
