What are molecular scissors so called? Write their use in biotechnology.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Molecular scissors are the restriction enzymes that are used for cutting of DNA at specific locations. Molecular scissors cut DNA at desired sequences between base pairs. Since they cut DNA at desired sequences and generate sticky ends that facilitate to join with host genome or vector DNA. This helps in introduction of desired gene and introduce into vectors for expression.

Assertion: DNA segments can be excised by 'molecular scissors' or 'chemical scalpels' that biotechnologists call restriction enzymes Reason: Restriction enzymes are synthesised by microbes as a defence mechanism and are specific endonucleases which can cleave double-stranded DNA.

Give any two microbes that are useful in biotechnology.
