In the Carius method of estimation of halogens, 0.250 g of an organic compound gives 0.141 g of AgBr
Calculate the percentage of bromine in the compound. (At. wt. of Ag= 108, Br= 80).

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(a) In this case,
Mass of the organic compound = 0.250 g
Mass of silver bruulide formed =0.141 g
Molecular mass of silver bromide =108 + 80
=108
188g of AgBr contain bromine =80g
0.141 g of AgBr will contain bromine
`=(80)/(188) xx 0.141 =0.06g`
Percentage of bromine in the given compound `=(0.06)/(0.250) xx 100=24`
