In a Carius determination, 0.234 g of an organic substance gave 0.334 g of barium sulphate. Calculate the percentage of sulphur in the given compound

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In this case,
Mass of the compound taken =0.234g
Mass of `BaSO_(4)` obtained =0.334g
233g of `BaSO_(4)` contain sulphur=32g
0.344 of `BaSO_(4)` will contian sulphur `=(32)/(233) xx 0.334=0.04587g`
So, 0.046g of sulphur is present in 0.234 g of the compound.
Percentage of sulphur in the given compound `=(0.04587)/(0.234)xx 100=19.60`
