`[Fe(CN)_(6)]^(4-)` and `[Fe(H_(2)O)_(6)]^(2+)` show different colours in dilute solution because

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`CN^(-)` ion in `[Fe(CN)_6]^(4-)` being a strong filed ligand, causes greater splitting of d-orbitals and thus, absorbs light of higher frequency whereas `H_2O` in `[Fe(H_2O)]^(2+)` being a weak field ligand causes less splitting and absorbs light radiatons of lower frequency.
