Define specific rotation....

Define specific rotation.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Specific rotation is defined as degrees of rotation observed when plane polarized light is passed through a tube 1 decimetre (10 cm) long having a solution with concentration `1g mL^(-)` at a specific temperature and wavelength. Mathematically,
`[alpha]b = ("Observed angle of rotation") /(l xx c)`
where .I. is the length of polarimeter tube in dm and c. is the concentration in `g mL^(-)`.
